Objective:  I can practice my test-taking skills to prepare to take the SAT or (re)take the SBA by using the skills we practiced as a class when reading "Femininity" and "About Men" and applying those skills to my independent reading of "A Woman's Beauty:  Put-Down or Power Source?"
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Get a Chromebook and sign in to Google Classroom
    • Review your score for "A Woman's Beauty" and your written answer
      • If you have a mustache on your multiple-choice, you have been identified as a student who needs to earn a 3 on the SBA.  If not, consider this practice for the SAT.  Every student must "sit" the SBA; the other alternative to "testing out" is to earn the equivalent score on the SAT.
    • Open the CLASSROOM Beauty Performance Task in Google Classroom--you may take notes here or on a paper copy--your choice--you must turn in your notes on Friday with your essay.  Taking notes/annotating is a key test-taking skill.
    • Follow along in the Beauty prezi as we continue (you do not need to open this unless you are working from home)
    • Review Strong Thesis Statement directions and write your own.
    • How does Sandro Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" from the 15th century depict beauty?  What connection can be made to "A Woman's Beauty"?
    • Read Marge Piercy's "Barbie Doll" and Stop and Think:  To what extent are others responsible for women's beauty?
    • If time, read from The New York Times "The Meanings of the Selfie" by James Franco and answer the short answer questions.
    • Exit Task:  Put your notes someplace safe if you are not annotating in Google Classroom.  In the box is fine, remember to pick them up tomorrow.

Objective:  I can practice my test-taking skills to prepare to take the SAT or (re)take the SBA by using the skills we practiced as a class when reading "Femininity" and "About Men" and applying those skills to my independent reading of "A Woman's Beauty:  Put-Down or Power Source?"
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Write down today's objective and be prepared to read it to the class if called on by Miss Frost.
  • IMPORTANT:  Your work today is an individual test of the skills we have practiced last week to prepare you for the upcoming SBA (about 1/2 of you will retake), but it is also excellent practice for the SAT which many of you will take your junior/senior year to prepare for applying to college next year.  Either way, you need to take this week's practice seriously, starting today, as it will result in 2 test grades.  1 for today, and 1 for Friday.
  • When the reading is handed to you, review number 1 on page 646 (the back) with the teacher.
    • As you read, annotate with A for agree and D for disagree (5 points)
    • After reading, draft an answer to that question (#1, p. 646) on the back of the reading.  At least 5 sentences --a more thorough answer will be 7-10--watch your time here (10 points).
    • After you write, show Miss Frost or the substitute your answer for completion, and get the multiple-choice questions.  You can use the reading while you answer these (10 points--2 bonus points just for completion!).
  • Exit Task:  Put your name on the Multiple Choice Questions and staple them to your reading and turn into the box.

Objective:  I can review what metonymy is and contribute to our class conversation about our favorite books.
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Get out your reading folder and book; find someplace comfortable to read
    • What is the definition of metonymy?

    • 25 min. Independent Reading
    • Class Discussion:  What are your favorite books, children or otherwise, why?  If you don't contribute verbally, you can write your answer and keep it in your folder to earn the points--make sure you write the questions and date.
  • Exit Task:  Return your reading folder to the file cabinet.
