Objective:  I can determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text through analyzing their development over the course of the text utilizing either the New Historicism or Formalism Lens, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account (RL2).
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Get out your copy of Of Mice and Men and pick up your preferred lens New Historicism or Formalism
    • DW:  Copy the above objective to the top of your lens questions and share with a neighbor why you selected this lens.
  • Review the directions for lens questions--remember this functions as your reading test, so be sure to include quotations and page numbers in your answers to show a thorough and thoughtful reading.
    • Follow along to Audible reading Ch. 1-5 (approx. 32 min.) and answer 2 lens questions.
  • Share the Activity One directions for Formalism (p. 17) and New Historicism (p. 25) from the Prestwick House Sample and divide into groups based on the amount of students reading each lens.  This will be an ongoing poster-project that they will work on as we read the novel each day.
  • Exit Task:  Determine groups and select symbol (#2 New Historicism) or a marginalized group (#6 Formalism) and write on post-it selection and group members to give to teacher.
