Objective:  I can demonstrate knowledge of transcendental (19th c.) foundational works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes or topics (RL.11-12.9).
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Get an Orange Lit. Book and the handout then review your notes on transcendentalism and prepare to answer questions.  You will be called on at random.
    • Work together as a class to review the Transcendentalism questions in the handout.
    • Preview “Self-Reliance” p. 185-186
    • Read "from Self-Reliance" as class
      • Review what evidence, quotation, and dialogue are
    • With a partner, find evidence for as many statements as you can.
    • Collaborate as a class using the prezi to ensure that each statement is complete.
      • If you have used one of the quotes shown in the prezi, raise your hand to explain which statement you used it for (if you are missing that statement, use this as an opportunity to complete your handout).  Remember--there is not one right answer for each of these, if you used a different quotation to complete a statement, what is important is that you can explain why.
    • We just did critical analysis!  What is that? Read the explanation in the handout and highlight your understanding.
Exit Task:   Complete the brief, analytical summary of “Self-Reliance” by filling in the blanks below using your statements and a quote to support.

Objective:  I can analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the structure an author uses in writing to see whether the structure makes points, clear, convincing, and engaging (RI11-12.5).
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Get your folder and sit with the partner assigned to you.
    • We will now take some time to evaluate our own work, as well as a peer’s using the assessment document.
  • Exit Task:  Turn in your folder with the printed documents and the assessment in the front right pocket of the folder.  On a post-it, explain how you feel about your final product considering how much effort you put in given the amount of class time spent on this work, and whether or not you would anything differently next time we work in class on an assessment.
