Objective:  I  know who Henry David Thoreau was in relation to Ralph Waldo Emerson and why he coined the phrase, “Non-violent Civil Disobedience,” so I can explain what Civil Disobedience is the three types of appeals used to influence others.
Agenda:  
  • Entry Task:  Quick Write on the handout-Sometimes a government enforces a law that is intended to protect or benefit people but actually infringes on their rights, such as the right to free speech.  
  • Look back at your notes from the Transcendentalism video--who were three major transcendentalists?
  • Watch the Civil Disobedience video in the prezi and answer the questions on your handout
    • What is Civil Disobedience? and what famous figures used it?
  • Define the three types of appeals from the prezi
  • Go on the gallery walk set up in your classroom to look at Banksy’s graffiti artwork
    • Select the three mini posters you like best and glue them into your notebook
      • Next to each, explain:
        • A. What the artist is trying to say
        • B. Which type of appeal and WHY,
        • C. How does it apply to Civil Disobedience?
  • Exit Task:  Share out an example of each type of appeal as seen in Banksy’s art
