BC Daily Objective and Agenda

Objective:  Inner circle--I can propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that probe reasoning and evidence; ensure a hearing for a full range of positions on a topic or issue; clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions; and promote divergent and creative perspectives (SL11-12.1c), Outer circle--and I can respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives; synthesize comments, claims, and evidence made on all sides of an issue (SL11-12d).   
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  Sit in the seat assigned to you and review your ideas in your Socratic Seminar packet in preparation for our discussion today.
  • Review the expectations for how to participate in the inner circle and select a role from the outer circle
    • Inner-Circle: Participate in the discussion based on your notes, but do not simply read from what you wrote.  You should be listening to what others are saying and responding to that. Those who are most effective in the discussion are those who refer not only to their personal experiences but also those that you have read or watched.  
    • Outer-Circle:  You will select one of the options from the following sheet and make notes about the discussion only in regards to that option.  Your sheet should be completely filled to show that you were paying attention throughout the discussion, and you should be able to draw conclusions based on what you heard.  There will be no hot seat this seminar since both circles will discuss.
    • Both groups need to write their stance before we begin
  • Inner circle drive the discussion while outer circle and teacher observe
  • Exit Task:  Last 10 min. Stop the discussion and complete reflection.  At the end of the second day, give 15 min. to end and turn in your packets.
