Course Description

  • Semester 1
  • Semester 2
Picture
This course is designed for students who need re-teaching of core concepts assessed on the ELA SBA, but may be interested in being prepared to go on to college. The organization of the class begins with student-selected texts and teacher-modeling of reading skills followed by guided reading of more complex texts ending in independent exploration. Read from literary classics like Emerson and Thoreau as well as Shakespeare but also explore the graphic novel and dystopian fiction along with informational texts.  Write informational letters, develop creative writing skills, reflective essays, and research projects. Share with partners, in groups, and develop arguments in order to participate in whole class discussions. Students of this class earning a D for both semesters equates to passing the ELA SBA as well as earning ELA credit; students who earn a B or higher will be automatically enrolled in a credit-bearing English course if they elect to attend any community college in the state of Washington or Eastern Washington University.

Benefits to Bridge

This class is a fantastic opportunity for students, families, and our school.  Students struggling to "pass" the SBA in ELA for a variety of reasons have had to retake the test in the past.  In some cases, students retake the test up to 4 times.  This class eliminates that requirement although they may still choose to do so.  For students who have earned 1s and 2s on the test, passing this class means they have earned their graduation requirement.  Although they can continue to retake the test, this class has been proven to teach the skills to get students "college ready."  Because of this, students who earn a B in the class will be automatically enrolled in English 101 in any community college in the state of Washington as well as Eastern Washington University if they choose to apply and go on to college.  Because not every student will choose to go on, rest assured that this course provides those skills that we as parents, teachers, and community members want our graduates to have whatever it is they choose to do with their degree.  For more information, please visit the Bridge to College website.
