Objective: I can determine two or more central ideas of “Funny in Farsi” and analyze in order to create a theme statement (RL11-12.2).
Agenda:
  • Entry Task: Review your feedback on getting to theme from “Salvador Late or Early”
    • Track your progress on your chart and look closely at what you need to do differently according to the rubric.
  • Go over expectations for Memoir Definition and Characteristics (we will focus on aesthetic in our next class)
    • Firoozeh Dumas wrote an autobiography of growing up as an Iranian-American which describes her family's 1971 move from Iran to Southern California, the members of her diverse family, and their struggle with culture shock.
      • We will read an excerpt from “Funny in Farsi” together in order to practice getting to theme before you read a memoir of your choosing to attempt on your own.
  • After reading work with the small group assigned to you, using Getting to Theme to complete the Memoir Definitions and Characteristics handout.
    • Your teacher will be looking for examples to share with the class while you work.
  • Exit Task:  Share out example theme statements and discuss how we can have multiple themes for the same story and what makes a theme “right”.
