Objective: I can demonstrate knowledge of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “ I Have a Dream” speech, including how two or more texts from the same period treat the themes presented within the speech (RL11-12.9).
Agenda:
  • Entry Task:  In your notebook, write down one historical figure whom you believe to be influential and why.
    • Share out 5 examples and add to board
  • Discuss:  What do you know about Martin Luther King, Jr.?  Write a brief paragraph in your notebook describing him based on what we discuss.
  • Review poetic devices list in Quizlet  
  • As you follow along to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech (16:27 min) annotate for any devices or word choice that is striking to you (even if you don’t know what to call it).  
    • Try to find at least 5
    • After reading, share out 10 lines that were striking and what we found
  • Read from the poetry packet (teacher read aloud or students take turns) and annotate for devices on the poems
  • Exit Task: Annotate on the speech where at least 2 of the poems connect to the speech.
