Objective: I can review the definitions of repetition and stanza to examine the form of a sestina (L11-12.4) in order to utilize them in creating my own sestina (W11-12.4).
Agenda:
  • Entry Task: With a neighbor, discuss what you think the most common reason is for attempting to have a book banned?  Who do you think tries to get books banned most?
    • Take a look at the linked graphs--were you surprised by the results?
  • Sherman Alexie is an author that went to Reardan High School; he has been on the Most Frequently Challenged Book List every year since 2010.
    • Here is what he thinks about that.
  • Today we will examine one of his poems and tomorrow we will analyze a chapter from his book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.  You can determine whether or not you think works like his should be banned.
  • The poem “The Business of Fancydancing” is a sestina; as we read the poem, examine it for any details that seem to be unique to this form.
    • What do you notice?
  • Compare what we discovered to the sestina template.
  • Come up with your own topic for a sestina and the six words you would use for repetition.
    • Begin your draft of a sestina following the template provided.  If you do not finish, you can come back to this on our draft day this week as one of our options.
  • Exit Task:  Share with your neighbor, based on what you read and what you know about why some books are challenged and by whom, do you think Alexie’s work should be banned?
