Objective:  I can cite strong textual evidence to support my ideas around how dystopian readings mirror and reflect the culture in which we live (RI.11-12.1) in order to select the text I am most interested in reading independently.
Agenda:
  • Entry Task: Grab a glue stick, scissors, and the visuals.  Cut the visuals apart and be ready to paste them into your notes as we work together to answer this question which needs to be written at the top of your page, How do our dystopian readings reflect the culture in which we live?
  • Follow along to the prezi to complete the following
  • Teacher Read: Huxley to Orwell and annotate for the content of each book based on what you know about a dystopia
    • Students share out and teacher adds details to poster
    • Add the details to your pages in your notebook
  • Take notes on the George Orwell video (5 min.), writing down at least 5 facts that may have impacted his writing and how his writing impacted our culture
    • Students share out and teacher adds details to poster
  • Take notes on the Aldous Huxley video (8 min.), writing down at least 5 facts that may have impacted his writing and how his writing impacted our culture
    • Students share out and teacher adds details to poster
  • Exit Task:  In the Venn Diagram, compare Brave New World to 1984 and answer the question, How do our dystopian readings reflect the culture in which we live?  Make sure all of your notes and visuals used today are organized into your notebook. Fold the article in half and keep it with your notes.
